Alison Buckler: Board Member / President 

Alison graduated from the USMMA in 2002 with a BS in Logistics and Intermodal Transportation.  After graduation she sailed for Maritrans aboard tugs and barges on the Delaware River and for Alaska Tanker Company aboard Crude Oil Tankers running into Valdez, Alaska. She's currently a member of the Association of Maryland Pilots and as such pilots ships and other vessels up and down the Chesapeake Bay. She holds an Unlimited Tonnage Masters License and has First Class Pilotage for the Chesapeake Bay, Chesapeake and Delaware Canal, and also Valdez, Alaska.  Alison lives in Annapolis, MD with her husband & daughter. 


Mark O'Malley: Board Member 

Mark O'Malley was appointed to the Department of Natural Resources Director of Boating Services on August 13, 2012 after serving 31 years in the United States Coast Guard.  In this position he is responsible for the oversight of grants to municipalities for public boating access, safe boat regulations, navigation standards, and ice breaking for the Great State of Maryland.  In this capacity he supervises 39 dedicated professionals, the operation of dozens of vessels and a budget of twenty million dollars.


Captain Mark P. O'Malley's last assignment in the Coast Guard was Commanding Officer of Sector Baltimore.  Sector Baltimore executes all Coast Guard missions from the C&D Canal south to Smith Point, the Potomac River and National Capital Region.  Captain O'Malley is a graduate of the University of Massachussetts.  He also graduated from the College of Naval Command and Staff at the Naval War College and recieved a Masters Degree in Public Administration from George Maason University.  He later attended the Maxwell School National Security Management Course at Syracuse University and the National Security Leadership Seminar at the Department of State's Foreign Service Institute.


Scott Szurovy: Board Member 

Scott graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 2005 earning a BS in Oceanography. Upon graduation he served 6 years as an active

duty Surface Warfare Officer.  In his first position as a civilian, he entered the government contracting industry planning C4I installations on Unit and Force Level Naval Ships.  In 2012, he moved to a position as a contract specialist for Navy Expeditionary Warfare where he was charged with procuring all C4I equipment for various Navy Expeditionary Units. In 2014, he accepted a position at Tech Marine Business as the project manager in charge of Combat Systems installations on Nimitz Class Carriers during their half-life major overhaul.  He lives in Annapolis, MD with his wife & daughter their two dogs.  In his free time, he enjoys cooking everything and anything on his big green egg and making delicious homemade beer.


Klaus Lutha: Treasurer

An Ohio Native and United States Merchant Marine Academy Graduate, was an early supporter of the AMS and now had agreed to join our leadership. More details on Klaus to follow.

Patrick Houst: Board Member 

A graduate of Trinity Pawling Preparatory School, attended SUNY Maritime for two years before realizing that sailing was not for him.  He decided to start working to find what path was right for him.  That path found him moving down to Annapolis in late 2013 to help out his brother's family transition to the area.  Shortly after moving, he found himself back in the maritime industry, working for Vane Brothers Tug and Barge Company as a scheduler and operator in their traffic department.  Within six months he started scheduling and operating in their busiest bunker port, New York.  He has been in this position for over a year now

Brian Houst: Founder & Board Member

Brian graduated in 2002 from Fort Schuyler's, USCG 3rd Mates License Program with a BS/MS. He broke into the dry bulk side of the market as an Operations Manager with Hoegh Autoliners and then grew into a role with Pasternak Baum with a concentration in FFA brokerage and chartering. As the firms scope grew the FFA brokerage evolved into trading and consulting for a few smaller niche players including Dome Chartering & Trading with whom he is presently employed as Director of Freight Trading. Over his career, Brian has seen many sides of freight trading ranging from Charterer, FFA Trader/Broker and Operator. Brian has been a featured speaker at the Capital Link Dry Bulk Derivative Forum, the FFA forum for the Canadian Institute of Charted Ship Brokers, the FIS Virtual Steel Mill and the dry cargo panel at the ASBA Cargo Conf in 2014. Dome Chartering and Trading is a Commercial Manager of Foreign Flagged and US Flagged Vessels, as well as consultancy work in freight portfolio management including but not limited to vessel operations and freight futures. DCT's focus spans across the dry bulk, tanker and container market. The firm is owned by three graduates of Fort Schuyler and is based in Annapolis Maryland, where they recently built their new corporate headquarters. Brian lives in Annapolis, MD with his wife and two sons.
